Your Guide to Nature-Friendly Garden Design

Your garden design may have created an oasis of peace and relaxation, you’ve designed it in such a way that you have a perfect view of the landscape ahead of you, there’s an area in which to sit and relax, and you now have a much tidier garden since you’ve been caring for it more.

However, there may be one thing missing, and that’s nature. Birds, animals, nothing comes to your garden and it’s one of the main attractions of a British garden, making it more relaxing and interesting to spend time in.

Attract wildlife naturally

How you care for your garden will determine what you will grow in your garden and who will visit, drainage, soil type and the climate conditions all play their part. Creating habitats to attract wildlife will encourage birds and insects to your garden. Trees, shrubs, water and flowers are all key to attracting birds and animals. Both short and long grass will attract different types of birds and insects.

Water features

Water features, as well as being an attractive addition to any garden will help attract certain types of wildlife. We’re talking amphibians, aquatic insects as well as birds, which are all potential visitors to your garden.

Climbing plants

Climbing plants, thorny shrubs and hedges all help to provide shelter and breeding areas for birds, so these are definitely a good idea if you’re thinking attracting wildlife.

Bats, insects and other creatures

If you want to graduate to attracting other animals as well as birds, then think about bat boxes, and think about insects, hedges and shrubs are great for butterflies, so leave cutting and tidying them up until late winter.

Forage and feed

Creating places for wildlife to forage and feed, is a great way of observing wildlife and for your children too, flowers can provide nectar for insects, and tidy shrubs and borders will provide food at different times of year for various types of birds.

Ivy and fruit bushes are a great source of foods for insects and birds, and annual plants provide a good source of seeds throughout autumn and winter.
