Small Garden Ideas to Make the Most of Space

Do you have a small garden and you're unsure of what to do with it? Perhaps you're trying to maximise the space but not sure where to start. In our post today we're going to giving you some tips and ideas on how to maximise the space in your garden if it's a little on the small size.

Simple is Best

If you're garden is on the small size, then it's best to not clutter it with too many things. Try a few ornaments and keep the plant colours you use conservative without too much overcomplicated palettes. You could also try a 50/50 balance of both hard and soft with paving and plants. That way your garden has a little light and dark, hard and soft elements that will help it to look larger but too crowded.

Circles and Squares

Shapes can influence how big your garden looks so adding circles into squares and squares into circles could make your garden look bigger, or a curved path or maybe even some edging around the garden, which will help to make the garden seem much bigger than it really is.

Plan Ahead

Make sure that before you start on your garden that you've carefully planned what you're going to do. Stick to one style you've agreed on and then draw it out on a piece of paper. It doesn't have to be a work of art, just a clear diagram you can make sense of. Make sure that in your plan you feature all the materials and plants which are going to be in it, and of course any ornaments you're going to have and where they're going to go.

Be Selective in Your Choices

You're going to have to be strict about what you have and what you don't, a small garden is not going to look great if its cluttered, so you're going to have make some decisions about what to include and what not to include.

Tall flowers make for clever tricks of shape and size, if you plant tall plants and flowers rather than overcrowd it with small and chunky ones, you'll give the impression your garden is a lot bigger than it really is.

Vegetables

If you fancy vegetables in your smallish garden then think sweet-corns and climbing beans, with flowers why not include hollyhocks, foxgloves, snowdrops, chards, cowslips and some tall grasses.
