Garden Maintenance Tips For Early Spring

After your garden has undergone the travails of winter, it's now time to review the condition it is in, and start maintaining it for the coming spring and summer months beyond. You're probably happy that the long days and milder weather is on its way, well so is your garden!

We're going to be talking about the importance of spring garden maintenance and those all important things you can do to help, including pruning, dead-heading, weeding, composting and planting. Also a quick look at the kind of garden tools you should be looking out for.

Firstly,

Garden Maintenance Tools

What sort of tools should you be looking out for now that spring is approaching? Think of some simple hand tools such as pruners and cutting tools, brushes and rakes, composters and bins, spades and digging tools, gloves, plant protection and of course a wheel barrow. Other than that, a new mower if your current one isn't working.

Pruning

Prune any blooming shrubs as early as possible and you'll find that spring is the perfect time to prune them. Remove all dead wood, branches leaves and anything that looks like it's ready for the composite bin. It's important to remove old wood for all sorts of shrubs, and by doing so you're giving your shrubs ample opportunity to grow in a less dense and much lighter area so they have room to manoeuvre.

Dead-Heading

Remove old flower heads but always remember to keep the rest of the plant as it is for now. They'll grow new heads soon enough.

Weeding

Weeding is always important and will give your plants, shrubs, bushes and small trees room to grow and spread out a bit. Weeds can only choke your plants so get rid of them as soon as possible.

Composting

Take whatever you have left and place it in the compost bin, you can use this later, it's always useful to a garden.

Trim

Use a pair of shears specifically designed for cutting edges for your beds, paths, patios or borders, this will tidy things up nicely, preparing the way for spring. It'll really make such a dramatic difference to the overall aesthetic appeal of the garden.

Mowing

Mowing is important at this time of year, keep in mind the grass is going to be in uneven tufts and very, very soft. Make sure you adjust your mower accordingly to a high setting and cut the top off the grass, if you cut too low then you may cause the grass to be ripped up from the ground, which will leave you with unwanted and unsightly bald patches of earth.

Plants

Spring is a time of growth, and rebirth so it's a perfect time to add new plants in your garden, anything from shrubs, blooming bulbs that will come up in summer, and trees, are all great new additions to your garden. Remember, however to make sure the frost has definitely left your garden for this year before you plant anything else. Give your new plants a fighting chance.

Spring Garden Maintenance

Maintaining your garden is important all year round, but especially important as spring approaches following the ravages of winter. Make sure you carry out a good spring clean of your garden, preparing it for the balmy summer evenings, hot sunny afternoons and humid nights – or perhaps that's wishful thinking on our part! At least you'll be prepared!
