Winter gardening tips and ideas

In today’s post, we’re going to be looking at how care for your garden in winter. We know your garden is precious, especially at this time of year. You want to take care if so that when Spring comes, a lot of the hard work’s been done already. It won’t simply be just a case of cleaning it a little, although this is an important job too and can be done in tandem with planting and cutting. This is an ideal opportunity to freshen up the garden with plants and perhaps experiment with garden design installation

Naturally, in winter gardening is more difficult, but it doesn’t have to be a complete nightmare. With a little hard work, your garden can look fresh and pretty, even during the harsh winter months.

Plan the perfect garden

You can plan your garden so you can plant vegetables, fruit and herbs and some plants too, so you’ll have a perfect winter garden on both a practical and aesthetic level. There are some beautiful plants to plant around winter time too , these include evergreen grasses such as carex, skimmia and cyclamen, all of which will add colour.

Vegetables and herbs

Vegetable and herbs can be protected with a fleece throw over them should there be a hard frost, however they should be strong enough to withstand a cold winter. Vegetables can include onions, spinach, beans, peas and asparagus, and cold-hardy herbs which are ideal for the winter as are mint and parsley which will continue to grow through the snow. Rosemary is good, although it should already be firmly established in the garden before the start of winter to survive. Sage, thyme and bay trees are all cold survivors, although they’re unlikely to grow much during the colder months.

Clean away the mess and get ready for Spring

You can also use winter to clean up and rake the leaves away. Yes, it’s unavoidable really but it can be done together with the planting and tidying up of the rest of the garden. Remove dead plants and branches and you can set up a compost system where you’ll be able to use your plant debris perfectly. Take away any plant pots and hanging baskets and cover them, preferably in the shed while the hard frosts and gale force winds are around. Once you’ve cleaned and planted in your garden, you can start to think about planning for spring. Repair any broken gardening tools and sharpen any dull tools which you’ll need to use in the warmer weather.
